A Message From COACH P.!
I was just out back throwing the ball for my dog. He was running amidst the variety of summer lawn toys and chairs and I noticed, to my amazement, that when he ran along the edge of the ol’ Slip-n-Slide, he would round off the corners. Every time he got the ball, he would run along the edge for 25 feet and then just step on the corner and “cut off” the edge. It reminded me of our start early this summer when I would be yelling at the players on their long runs to “not cut the corner” and “don’t cheat yourself. Run AROUND the corner”. Even after my attempts at persuasion, some of the players would still take the 2-3 foot “shortcut” and not run the full field.

I start with this rambling tale to demonstrate what I have learned. It appears that any animal, man or beast, naturally takes the easier routes when offered. It certainly shows that it’s not a conscious choice, just a learned behavior that everyone exhibits.

And that brings me to my point. We are trying to achieve a level of greatness this season that will require maximum effort from everyone to accomplish. I challenge the players to “break out of the expected behavior”. Let other players and other teams be the ones to “cut the corners” of their soccer training and preparation. If we run the entire field in all that we do, we will be that much better prepared as the season progresses. Let the other guys take a day off from practice. Let others practice as sloppily as they would like, joking around and not paying attention. We will be the team, because of our desire to do ALL of the necessary work that won’t tire in the 57th minute, the team that will be able to execute their game plan under pressure, the team that wants to beat a goalie badly with a great penalty kick.

Join me in this challenge. Push your teammates to be better than they think they are ready to be. Make the effort for yourself, because of what you want out of soccer!!
